Time to replace those SMMD caps. I see that some are recommending Nichicon 220 uF 16 V Low ESR replacements instead of the original spec ones. As a matter of interest, which Panasonic model caps did you use?AndyChipshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13665749418989548903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320049850813041439.post-43623178466705810592023-09-28T06:24:58.182-04:002023-09-28T06:24:58.182-04:00Awesome, Andy! Most of the sellers on eBay look like they've been 3D printed and I don't trust those. Or if you want really to sell, you still should be able to fetch a good amount (even if sold for parts/repair) on eBay (this this model is quite rare). I remember it being expensive, but can't remember how much it was. I excitedly powered mine up but it just chirruped for 15 secs and turned off. Upon opening it up I could see that it was the infamous middle gear problem. I'm going to give it a clean and report back. Thanks for the great write-up.AndyChipshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13665749418989548903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320049850813041439.post-65996277509556951902022-03-06T06:25:48.274-05:002022-03-06T06:25:48.274-05:00Hi Ed. As I have said the left/right balance is fine just the volume on the low side but listenable. Just like having the volume control turned down. Compared to my Sony D-350 the volume certainly sounds low. They are both 9mw per chanel. I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are able to find an electronics technician near you to clean and replace the SMD electrolytic caps - you should do it soon to avoid further damage to this rare unit (the electrolytes in the caps are unfortunately corrosive and conductive).Ed (EdRetroTech)https://www.blogger.com/profile/10985696869874715294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320049850813041439.post-11704693240750871272021-12-29T08:15:02.698-05:002021-12-29T08:15:02.698-05:00Lovely job. If not, are you sure the polarity of your DC 9V power supply is correct (matches the Z555)? Your original battery is certainly dead by now, so I would remove it immediately and try just using the DC power for now. Next check is to open the unit up to see if the DC plug has a cracked solder on the plug connector. Even if you it comes to life, you will need to open the unit to clean up the hardened grease on the lens pickup track... Good luck and let me know how it goes!Ed (EdRetroTech)https://www.blogger.com/profile/10985696869874715294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320049850813041439.post-71539510562530864932021-11-17T15:35:27.248-05:002021-11-17T15:35:27.248-05:00I discovered my old Z555 by chance today. Power supply correct with 9V, but no display, not even "Charging". Is there a simple solution?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
